Every day, I encounter job seekers who are surprised when I mention the need to optimise their CVs for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). These systems are the initial gatekeepers in many hiring processes, scanning resumes before a human ever sees them. Understanding how to tailor your CV for ATS can significantly enhance your job search success.

Understanding ATS

Applicant Tracking Systems are software applications used by employers to manage and filter job applications. They scan resumes for specific keywords, qualifications, and formatting to determine which candidates best match the job requirements. A resume that isn't optimised for ATS may be overlooked, regardless of the candidate's actual experience.

Optimising Your CV for Applicant Tracking Systems (a.k.a. The Robots That Judge You) 🤖

Many professionals fret over having a CV that's too long, fearing it might bore the reader to tears. But here's the twist: a well structured, longer CV can actually be your best friend.

Why?

  • More Room for Keywords: Think of your CV as a game of resume bingo. The more keywords you have, the better your chances of hitting the jackpot.

  • Context is King: Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) aren't just scanning for keywords; they're assessing how and where you use them. Simply listing "ninja" skills won't cut it unless you've demonstrated your stealthy prowess in your work experience.

  • Better Search Rankings: Recruiters often use ATS like a search engine. The more relevant terms your CV contains, the higher the likelihood it appears in their search results.

Tips to Outsmart the Robots:

  • Mirror the Job Ad: Tailor your CV for each role by incorporating key phrases from the job description. It's like online dating for jobs - you want to show you have common interests.

  • Use Full Job Titles: Avoid abbreviations. Instead of "HRD," spell out "Human Resources Director." Remember, the robots aren't fluent in corporate slang yet.

  • Ditch the Fancy Formatting: ATS despise images, tables, and elaborate designs. Keep it simple: no headshots, quirky fonts, or tables. Save your artistic flair for your personal projects.

  • Highlight Your Expertise: Include an 'Areas of Expertise' section near the top. A concise bullet list helps both robots and humans quickly grasp your key skills without a scavenger hunt.

  • Choose the Right File Format: Some ATS prefer .docx files over PDFs. Always check the job application instructions. When in doubt, go with .docx - it might not be as sleek, but it's more likely to be ATS-friendly.

A couple of good CV optimisation tools to get you started are Resume Worded and Job Scan.

Because if you’re going to fight robots for a job, you might as well be armed with the right tools to ensure your CV doesn't end up in the digital abyss.
