Staying Motivated, Well, and Productive When the Days Get Shorter.

It’s the time of year when 5pm feels like midnight, your inbox feels heavier than your coat, and motivation might be buried under three layers of knitwear and a Kathmandu jacket.

Winter in Australia isn’t exactly brutal by global standards, but it still has a way of slowing things down. Energy dips. Routines unravel. Teams get sick, take leave, and struggle to stay in sync. The mid-year lull is real, and it can take a toll on wellbeing and productivity.

But here’s the good news: winter doesn’t have to be a slump. With a few intentional shifts, it can be a reset. A chance to regroup, recharge, and build momentum for the second half of the year.

1. Embrace slower energy - but keep the spark alive

Not every season needs to be full throttle. Slower months are a great time to focus on reflection, strategic planning, or creative projects that often get pushed aside.

Encourage your team to work with the rhythm of the season, not against it.

👉 Try this: Set aside a no-meeting afternoon each week for deep focus, reflection, or learning.

2. Prioritise sunlight and movement

Dark mornings and short days can zap energy fast. One of the easiest ways to counter that? Help your team chase daylight. Whether it’s encouraging walk-and-talk meetings, flexible start times, or a midday break to move, small changes can boost mood and motivation.

👉 Try this: Start a team 'walking club' to encourage people to take a break and get outside during the work day, even if it's just a lap around the block.

3. Make goals visible

Winter can blur the months together, and people can lose sight of the bigger picture.
👉 Try this: Create a simple visual tracker for team priorities so everyone can see progress and wins in real time.

Now is also a great time to reflect on your previous goals and recalibrate for the rets of the year. Get our advice on how to do that here.

4. Refresh the routine

Sometimes a little novelty goes a long way. Shift the team rhythm, trial a new tool, or run a fun internal event. Even small moments of connection can lift the mood and reset the energy.

👉 Try this: Host a winter warm-up lunch, team trivia, or hot drink drop-in (virtual or in-person).

5. Lead by example

If you're in HR or leadership, your energy sets the tone. When you show it’s okay to pause, reset, and protect wellbeing, others will follow. So yes, that includes taking your own leave, stepping away from the desk at lunch, or saying no to back-to-back meetings.

👉 Try this: Share your own winter reset practices with your team, whether it's journaling, Pilates, or binge-watching comfort TV.

The takeaway? Winter can work for you

It doesn’t have to be the season of low energy and lost momentum. With the right mindset - and a few practical tweaks - winter can be a powerful time to reset, reconnect, and refocus.

So before you write off the rest of winter as “just getting through,” ask yourself (and your team):

What do we need to feel better, work better, and reset right now?

The answer might be smaller than you think.
